NEET SS Pathology Eligibility 2026 โ Who Can Apply?
Not every pathologist can sit for NEET SS Pathology. Eligibility depends on three things: your postgraduate degree, your registration, and a degree-completion cut-off date. Here is what NBEMS has published for 2026, and what it published for the 2025 cycle so you know what to expect when the 2026 bulletin arrives.

The 2026 Information Bulletin had not been published when this page was last updated (14 October 2026). We update this page as soon as it is out.
Who Is Eligible
Degree. You can apply if you hold a recognised MD/DNB (Pathology) degree or provisional pass certificate, or are likely to hold it by the cut-off date. In the 2025 bulletin, NBEMS wrote that candidates must have "or likely to possess by" the cut-off date the degree or provisional pass certificate in the eligible feeder specialty, recognised under the NMC Act, 2019.
Cut-off date. For NEET-SS 2026, NBEMS's tentative schedule gives 31 January 2027 as the cut-off date for completing the qualifying degree. In the 2025 cycle, NBEMS stated that requests from candidates who qualify or get their results after the cut-off date "shall be summarily rejected." If your MD/DNB result comes after 31 January 2027, plan accordingly.
Registration. NMC or State Medical Council registration is mandatory, and you must carry documentary proof to the test centre on the exam day.
Foreign nationals and OCI cardholders. Per the 2025 bulletin, foreign nationals, including OCI cardholders, can appear without NMC registration. If admitted, the NMC may grant temporary registration for the duration of the course, limited to the institution where they are admitted, and the person must be registered in the country where they obtained their PG qualification.
Who Is Not Eligible (2025 bulletin rules)
Beyond meeting the degree, registration, and cut-off requirements above, NBEMS's eligibility criteria rule out a few specific categories of candidates:
- Candidates already pursuing or who have joined a DM / MCh / DrNB course through NEET-SS cannot apply for DrNB super specialty seats through NEET-SS for the entire duration of the course they joined, even if they resign or discontinue.
- FCPS qualifications from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mumbai are not treated as equivalent to MD/MS, so candidates cannot apply solely on that basis.
- Eligibility is provisional. Being issued an admit card or appearing does not give a right to a seat, and an ineligible candidate's result can be cancelled even after it is declared.
How the Application Worked Last Cycle (NEET-SS 2025)
The 2026 dates are not announced yet. For planning, here is the 2025 timeline from the NBEMS bulletin:
| Step | NEET-SS 2025 |
|---|---|
| Online application | 5 to 25 November 2025 |
| Edit window | 28 to 30 November 2025 |
| Image correction window | 12 to 14 December 2025 |
| Admit cards | 22 December 2025 |
| Exam | 26 and 27 December 2025 |
| Degree cut-off date | 31 January 2026 |
| Result | Declared 23 January 2026 |
| Exam fee | Rs. 3,500 per group, excluding payment gateway charges |
If 2026 follows the same pattern, expect applications to open in early November, about five weeks before the exam. NBEMS notifies the exact dates in the 2026 bulletin.
Keep These Ready Before You Apply
Last cycle, NBEMS gave candidates about three weeks between opening applications and closing them โ not much time to track down documents you don't already have on hand:
- MD/DNB (Pathology) degree certificate or provisional pass certificate. This is what proves you meet, or will meet by 31 January 2027, the feeder degree requirement above.
- NMC / State Medical Council registration certificate. Registration is mandatory, and the proof is shown physically at the test centre, not uploaded online.
- Photograph, signature and thumb impression meeting NBEMS image guidelines. Images that don't comply with the bulletin's exact format and size are a common, avoidable reason applications get flagged for correction.
- Valid photo ID. Government-issued, and the name on it should match your application exactly.
Eligibility Is Only the First Step
Meeting every requirement above gets you an admit card, not a seat. Being eligible only lets you sit the exam โ qualifying is decided by a percentile cut-off, and qualifying candidates then compete for a limited number of DM Onco-Pathology seats through counselling. See the NEET SS Pathology cut-off trends for how it has moved, and the counselling guide for what happens after results.
Plan Your Preparation
With the exam about two months away, preparation matters more than paperwork. The complete 2026 exam guide covers the timeline, pattern and strategy in one place.
